Tragedy of the New Facebook
Filed Under (Facebook) by Traffic Guru on 15-09-2008

First there’s been much debate and outcry over the new face book layout. There have even been groups which popped up to encourage the face book powers that be to keep the old layout. Some at 500,000 or more members.
Unfortunately there are two main reasons these groups will ultimately fail to achieve their goal.
1. The money — FB’s new layout allows them to add more advertising displays. After all the money Microsoft and other private investors have poured into this thing they have to see return on their investment so more advertising will happen.
2. Double databases — forever running two concurrent databases side-by-side, one for the old and one for the new layout require far too many resources to make financial sense therefore the old one is going away.
It’s a worthy goal for any community to make their opinions heard.
One of the biggest reasons for this outcry is the normal process which new (and especially controversial) ideas go through before humans can adopt them.
It’s been scientifically proven the adoption of new ideas goes through three stages:
1. Laughter and mockery
2. Violent opposition
3. Acceptance as absolute truth — at this point it’s accepted as if it was always the truth, it’s self-evident
This is what I’ve observed with the new face book layout. Some of my facebook contacted me to say “hey, this is a very Mickey Mouse looking layout”.
Obviously this was the laughter and mockery state.
Then of course there were these multiple groups popping up some with more than half a million members violently protesting and begging Mark Zuckerberg to keep the old layout running side-by-side so FB members could choose which they wanted.
Now I believe we’re getting close to the third stage where people are going to accept the way it is and actually like it. Because I like the new layout and here’s why:
I’ve gotten used to it by now, it’s much cleaner than the old layout, and even though it’s still slow to load it’s faster to load than the old one which is one of the benefits to you and me as members.
Of course when it loads faster it’s also easier on the face book servers.
More to come on this exciting and controversial change that is affecting over 100 million people worldwide. Here’s a Facebook old display workaround
