Top 5 Ways to Get Over 10,000 Twitter Followers

How to Twitter and Get many more twitter followers fast.
Special guest post from my friend Darko.
I must admit…I’m not a huge fan of Twitter. But I’ve been using it long enough to see which types of people get most followers and why. So many people say stuff like…go white hat, go black hat, go and socialize, blah blah blah…but that falls just under one of the steps described below. Let’s get started.
1. Be well known in something…and bring your audience to Twitter
How it works: John Reese is very well known in internet marketing. Britney Spears in pop music. OK, let’s face it…who are the most followed users? Check out this Twitter resource. Hm…any commonality? They’re all with already established credibility!
You can follow Alexander here.
So if you have a well established website with good amount of visitors Twitter could be one of your ways to generate more traffic and followers. And now, enough for the obvious tips…let’s go to what every guru tells you to do in a different way but it all comes under the following advice…
2. What do you do when you’re new in the neighberhood? Socialize!
How it works: Yeah, basic principle that works everywhere. You’re new on Twitter…the new neighberhood. You don’t know anyone. You start socializing…following some people (obviously the famous ones.) Then you find people with common interests (your niche market) and you start socializing with them…and the word spreads that you’re good on a particular topic and your then friends with common interests start introducing their friends to you and you get more followers.
How do you translate this into concrete details? You go and register on twitter then you go to official Twitter Search and use some common phrases to search for people with similar interests. For example, if you have a website for learning Spanish you might want to try something like “learn spanish”, “learn to speak Spanish”, “write in Spanish” and so on (after doing this it is smart to subscribe to the search feed to get notified on updates when the search term appears again). Then you communicate with those people, help them out, give value. If you’re good enough you’ll be perceived as an authority. If you’re average you’ll be the cool guy interested in that topic.
Don’t just communicate and reply but share value! I personally don’t like accounts that are 100% talking with other people. Share some tips that all your followers can benefit from. If you’re just replying to other people then you aren’t benefiting me at all.
THIS IS A LONG TERM STRATEGY AND DON’T EXPECT RESULTS RIGHT AWAY.
3. Organize “Follow me on Twitter” contest …and give awards
How it works: Dan Raine did this and got many followers. He organized a contest in which he gave awards to random people who created a Twitter account (or already had one) and followed him. You might want to get creative in this…if you’re a member of some large forum you could utilitize their audience and give some awards to people who follow you (if you don’t know what to give, give money)…tell that the reason is you want to have more twitter followers and gain more exposure. Again, there are many ways to implement this idea.
The concept goes like this: Hi guys, I’m organizing a Twitter contest, all you need to do is to create a new Twitter account (this isn’t necessary if you already have one) and follow me on Twitter. From all you that you decided to follow me I’ll choose 5 people and give them $100. I want to do this for more exposure. Cheers!
4. Use Massive Twitter Friend Adder Tools
How it works: A short term solution. One day twitter may decide to delete all the users that haven’t posted for more than, let’s say, a year and from 10.000 you’ll get to merely 300 followers. However, this is a good way to gain social proof (this principle states: if so many people are following this guy then it is the right thing to do for me) and combine it with the previous “white hat” steps I told you about to double their power.
Again, you risk some consequences here. You might get banned or flagged or who knows what. So be careful here. If you’re using a black hat tool see what other users who used it say about on forums, blogs and other online community places.
5. Teach people about Twitter
This is a funny one. Ed Dale (deliberately or not) used to do this, after a new user started with his Thirty Day Challenge he told them to sign up for Twitter (because it is a powerful marketing tool) and in order to get familiar to start by following him. Now Ed has over 20.000 followers.
If you could educate your friends, family, audience about Twitter you could use something similar (give them a reason why to sign up…for example, to stay in touch every day with you, get real time tips and so on). Make them follow you. Or you can start teaching lessons on how to get followed on Twitter and say for people to start following you first (although I don’t know how ethnical this is.) But you get the idea. John Reese also did something similar, he told his list that Twitter is a very powerful marketing tool (it indeed is) thus making many people sign up and start following him for more tips on Twitter. Yay!
