Starry Night, Starry Bright, Starting the New Year Off Right

I wanted to start the New Year off on a light, positive, thankful, and personal note.

After reflecting back over this past year, as people do right before the turn of a new year, I was looking at the normal areas in which people evaluate.

Things like:

What went well in my life this year and what strategies worked?
What things were disasters or did not live up to my expectations?
What do I want in 2009?
What do I have to change, and what systems do I have to put in place to achieve my goals in 2009?
What am I thankful for right now?

I was gathering some insight into the first four questions which I’ll probably write more about in upcoming blog posts early in the new year.

As I was going into my memory and imagining back to the various parts 2008 my gaze wandered to my left and caught sight of my favorite all-time painting, Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh.

As cool as it would be, I have to tell you I don’t have the original painting hanging on my wall. Perhaps one day.

But I do have the next best thing… a knock off of it done by my sister. She did this picture when she was in eighth grade before I had even told her it was my favorite painting. Check it out here:

It’s amazing to me how she came about deciding to do this without knowing it’s something I liked so much. Maybe it’s that brother sister connection scientists always talk about.

Whatever caused it I’m very grateful because one day I was in her room and mentioned how it was my favorite painting and she offered to give it to me which I of course accepted.

It’s a constant reminder for me of one of my favorite things in the world (and a reminder of how much I love my sister too).

I love the painting because it’s very full, there’s lots of stuff going on, it’s somewhat chaotic and psychotic, very visually appealing, lots of colors, and almost erratic.

I’m a very visual person so it always seems like I have a thousand different images in my head at any one time and with all the stuff going on in the masterpiece I’m reminded of what’s normally going on in my headspace.

And it’s also a reminder that even though sometimes I get annoyed or frustrated with my family members I’m very grateful for them.

It’s been a year of ups and downs, my granddad did die in October, but my family’s always been there throughout.

I’m very thankful for them and have also joined forces in a business sense with some great people who I’m also thankful for.

I know this isn’t my usual topic about some business or marketing strategy or some test of a strategy I used but I wanted to be reflective in these last days of the new year and bring you some personal stuff on this the first day of the New Year.

And the first chance you get to be the New, Improved You.

I’ll keep mixing in some personal stuff with business strategies going forward because you’ve commented about liking the stories.
