Google is talking to Twitter about buying them. This is so Google. Therefore it must be a good strategy. Much like they did with the maps market they have waited for the startup companies to fight it out over who will dominate the micro blogging market and now they are just going to buy them.

The price may seem steep, like the 1.6 billion paid for YouTube, but the risk is far less than doing a startup in an unproven space. Who knew micro blogging would take off?
