What Do You Think of the New Gmail?

I don’t like the new layout. Is it simply because I’m attached to the old one and resistant to change?

Is this Facebook all over again?

You probably remember the big Facebook outrage when they changed their layout after taking the big cash infusion from Microsoft. The layout change allowed faster loading but was done with the principal purpose of showing more advertising and getting more page views.

So I fully accept it may just be my natural human resistance to change which is resisting the new Gmail layout.

I do question the timing though because Google Friend Connect just went live in a limited release recently and YouTube pay per click as well as Google’s new keyword tool were also recently launched. It seems like big G. is just releasing a bunch of stuff in advance of the holidays to generate newsworthy buzz.

Maybe it’s a response to the rapid changes and Facebook Connect being live. I don’t know their motives but…

I’m willing to give it a chance and see if these changes grow on me.

Right now I do believe the old layout was cleaner and I liked the color scheme better because it was simple.

The new box around the messages in the inbox annoys me but again maybe that will change. Take a look at what I’m talking about here:

So there is there new layout in case you haven’t seen in the last 72 hours and if you haven’t logged into your Gmail account in that time.

For the record, there are different themes and templates you have to choose from when you go into your settings tab.

Looks like I may have spoken too soon…after doing some digging and playing around for this article I discovered you can go back to the classic look.

You simply click on the settings in your top right navigation area, then click on themes and you’ll see this screen:

As you can see there are 31 different themes to choose from and if you want to return to the old way and resist the change choose the ‘Classic’ theme I’ve circled in yellow here.

So my final thought on this is good job to the googlers. They haven’t attempted to fix what wasn’t broken because they kept the original version which was working just fine.

What they have done is make it more fun and give you options for personalization which goes along with their current initiative and what they want to do to make Google a more social place similar to the big social sites that are having exponential growth like Facebook and MySpace.
