Facebook Declared a Phishing Site by Anti Phishing Software

Filed Under (Facebook) by Traffic Guru on 03-12-2008

This just happened last night and has the entire internet buzzing.

TechCrunch picked up this story after my friend Chris wrote a good article about a bad hit us e-mail delivery Jedi blog.

As you can see from the picture below its the negative gray windows pop in of death.  You may not be able to read it but it makes that annoying buzz sound and you know something bad has happened.

Facebook caught in a phishing trap
As you also know this happened to Chris’s site a little while back when trend micro software decided his site was a phishing site though it never had been in never will be.

It’s quite interesting though to me that even the big boys at Facebook with all their funding, coders and backing from big sites like Microsoft still get caught up in these anti-phishing software’s filters.

In the wild crazy world of the Internet you just never know what’s going to happen.

It seems to be a case of the baby being thrown out with the bathwater because the software is just an algorithm that searches for some basic components to decide whether a site is or isn’t bad and makes errors.

Obviously, the software is coded by humans and humans make errors.  There is no way it could ever be 100% perfect nor even as good as a human review.

But I guess as a side effect of all the bad stuff which happens on the Internet these type of softwares can have a place.  And for their users obviously the value of paying for and having the software is worthwhile for them even if they miss out on some good sites.

Facebook and their coding developers have since posted on the FB developers forum that Facebook has now been extracted from these phishing filters and the good name and reputation of the site has been restored.  They cleared up this little discrepancy.

The moral of the story is don’t get discouraged if your site gets wrongfully accused and caught up in these software’s filters.

Hopefully, one of your site users or customers will alert you if they see a problem and you can contact the software company directly to get your name cleared.

I’ll be interested in your comments if you’ve ever been caught up in this situation.  Tell me about your story in the comments if your site has been wrongfully accused.
