The Art Store Salesgirl

Filed Under (Relationship Marketing, Tips) by Traffic Guru on 03-11-2009

Over the weekend I rode out with my sister and mother to buy sis some art supplies because I’d promised to do so for her birthday present.

Originally, I planned to get her a very relaxing and fantastic full body massage.

But instead of getting her what I wanted to get her I decided to forego this and get her what she had told me she wanted. It seems like a very simple marketing tactic but oftentimes you forget it… do what the customer wants not what you project onto them that they want.

My eyes were opened as to how many specialty types of materials both in paints and colors as well as mediums were available to artists.  It’s like this with anything, you have a certain idea based on pop culture or just what “everybody knows” and then you come to find out more about the topic and realize it’s completely different than what you believed it was.

My sis had a massive list of stuff to get and she had said a similar list last year took her over an hour and 15 minutes to get.

Luckily for us one of the girls at the art store very alertly noticed a confused look on my sister’s face and had the skills and desire to do something about it. This sales girl understood good customer service.

She asked, “Do you need any help because you have a confused look on your face.”

I chimed in with “Absolutely, we have a whole list of stuff to get.”

She started rattling off where things were. Much of it was on the aisle we happened to be on and she started grabbing and putting them into the basket.  I told her to just stay with us because there is lots more to get.

My mom turned to me and said “Don’t be a jerk, she can leave.”

It was funny to me how my mom considered my request that this girl stay with us and do her job as somehow being rude.

Basically this salesgirl can choose to continue standing around doing nothing or she can be there helping us.  Often times stores have workers just standing around because most people refuse their help, or the workers are just lazy.

But my mom just considers herself to be so damned polite.  I guess that’s why she considered my request to be rude or that I was being difficult.

I’ve often been called difficult about things that just seemed intuitive and natural to me.

Of course, often times when you’re confident and ballsy you get what you want in life.  And the girl stayed with us the whole time until we got our entire list.  Miraculously, she knew where everything was and a couple of things on the list she knew their store didn’t stock.

So I was elated that what could have been a more than 75 minute ordeal was trimmed down to a sleek 15 minutes and we could get the hell out of there.

Then we got to the register and adventure started once again.

I always believe in negotiating most anything you do.

Haggling or negotiating is something everyone in the world is far better at than we are as Americans.  For some reason we believe the sticker price is the price we have to pay and we don’t even ask for any discounts.

So my sister said she had her student ID and the clerk promptly said “We don’t offer any student discounts.”

So I started talking to the clerk asking her about what her employee discount was and she said 30%.  So I started angling and asking more questions to see about using her discount for us. (She said a manager has to do it and none were present in the store at the moment. Very convenient but that’s another story)

And at a couple of different points both my sister and my mother asked me to “Stop being so difficult”.

I’m sure you’ve had this happen in your life because only minutes before on the drive up there with my mom she was whining about not having any money and being unable to afford books for the current semester.

But then when I attempt to do something about it and save her some money she tells me to stop.  I believe this is the type of “one step forward two steps back” contradiction and beliefs people have which hold them back.

I hope this isn’t something you’re doing saying you want one thing and then taking actions which will either stop you from getting it or won’t help you to get it.

It also highlighted to me the differences between siblings and between parents and offspring.

So take note of what you want in your life and then ask yourself, “Am I taking actions which are congruent with me getting this?  Who are the people attempting to help me get this and am I doing things to sabotage their efforts?”

It may seem too simple to be effective but I assure you once you start finding these little areas and making small changes in your life you will see better results.  It’s the law of compounding pure and simple.

Share with the TaggZilla community your examples and stories of things you notice in your life holding you back because it will help crystallize the issue in your mind so you can eliminate it and help us to get better results in our lives.  I’ll look forward to your comments.
